Miyake-jima Kamitsuki Mikoshi Daiko

Maikaze had the opportunity to participate in a Miyake workshop taught by the Tsumura Family this past Monday. Also in attendance were Sonoma County Taiko and Jiten Daiko. While the members of Maikaze had been maintaining the practice of performing "Bujin", in doing so prepared them for the rigors of the traditional Miyake style. Two takeaways from the workshop, distancing and hand placement, brought a new awareness to our approach to yoko-uchi playing and one we are looking forward to informing our approach to playing "Bujin" as well, while keeping honest to the differing styles.

The Miyake style, being in existence since the early 1800's, has had the affordability of refinement over time and one would wonder what it looked like in it's inception through its evolution today. Simplicity from the outside with many layers of complexity and nuance under the surface quintessentially typifies Miyake's powerful style so gratefully preserved and passed on by the Tsumura Family. True treasures of Wadaiko!
